ORLANDO
ORLANDO, a quiet farming town in 1970, now has more visitors than any other place in the state. The reason, of course, is Walt Disney World, which, along with Universal Studios, Sea World and a host of themed attractions, pulls more than 25 million people a year to a previously featureless plot of scrubland. Few people head to Orlando proper, choosing instead one of the countless motels along Hwy-192, fifteen miles south, or International Drive, five miles southwest. Despite enormous expansion over the last decade, the town itself remains free of the commercialism that surrounds it.
At the approximate geographic center of the state, the three-county Orlando area consists of 2,856 square miles. Orlando is situated approximately 150 miles from the Florida/Georgia border to the north, 50 miles from the Atlantic Coast to the east, 75 miles from the Gulf Coast to the west, and 370 miles from the Florida Keys at the southern tip of the state.
One of the area's biggest attractions is its year-round mild weather. Mid-Florida's subtropical climate has long been a strong drawing card for tourists and residents alike. At the heart of the "Sunshine State," the area"s average annual temperature is a comfortable 72.4 degrees. Our Average annual rainfall of 50 inches per year, keeps Central Florida lush and green throughout the year. The average elevation of the region is 127 feet above sea level.
Orlando is also a golfer's paradise with more than 70 courses in the area to challenge your game. Water sports also abound in central Florida where area lakes provide facilities for swimming, boating, canoeing, water skiing and wind surfing.
Shouldn’t where you stay on vacation be as special as the destination you have chosen to visit? In Orlando, you have the wide variety of accommodations options, sure to please everyone in your family. Imagine the look on your children’s faces when you check into a castle on your Orlando vacation. Or impress those hard-to-impress teens with a stay in a rock star’s mansion or a hotel overlooking an African savannah. For a pampering getaway, plan a stay at one of Orlando’s impressive resorts. With on-site spas, golf courses, fine dining and kids’ activities, you’ll never want to leave the grounds! From budget-friendly properties to once-in-a-lifetime luxurious escapes, the area’s nearly 450 hotels and resorts ensure that you will find your family’s perfect home-away-from-home in Orlando.
Let’s face it! You’ve worked hard all year, the kids have been busy with school, sports, clubs and of course, friends. It seems like the whole family is always on the go. It’s about time for a family vacation—but where can you go to find something everyone in the family will enjoy? Why, Orlando, of course! Nowhere else in the world will you find seven incredible theme parks, three water parks, and more than 90 other attractions offering from astronauts to zoos to parties and everything in between! And we mean everything! You would need to stay for 77 days just to experience all of Orlando’s attractions!
While in Orlando, don't miss an opportunity to visit the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. Time it right and you may witness one of the regular space shuttle launches. The space center is less than an hour's drive to the east.
TRANSPORTATION
Orlando is the perfect choice for domestic or international travel. Orlando International Airport (MCO) offers more flights to more places than any other airport in Florida. In fact, MCO provides non-stop service to more major U.S. destinations than most other cities in the country. More than 800 flights bring over 70,000 passengers through the award-winning Orlando International Airport every day. The airport is also a short distance from many of the attractions, meeting facilities and hotel accommodations.
